Martin practised at the Leeds Bar from 1972 to 1980 after which he practised as a solicitor for thirteen years before returning to the bar in 1993. He has at all times been involved in family work relating to children in both the public and private law categories. He has appeared regularly for a large number of local authorities as well as interested family members, particularly intervenors.
