Profile:

Karamjit’s background demonstrates real depth and width of experience. Before being called to the Bar, he worked for three years as a voluntary advisor with a Citizens Advice Bureau and within a social services department for four years.

After completing the BVC in 1999, Karamjit joined the Professional Conduct Department of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and was responsible for the investigation of complaints and the prosecution of those alleged to be in breach of the rules of conduct.

Karamjit joined 30 Park Square in May 2000 as a pupil and became a tenant the following year. He is a member of a modern forward thinking set of chambers following the merger with Sovereign Chambers of Leeds.

Karamjit’s experience of having worked for a local authority and a regulatory body has placed him well when working in this area of law.

Notable Cases: 

County Cars & Others v Sandwell MBC & Others [2006]

Application for judicial review in which the High Court clarified the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court to consider challenges to a Council’s ability to regulate the taxi trade. Karamjit appeared on behalf of the Claimant.

Vale v Hastings Borough Council [2006]

Karamjit appeared on behalf of the Appellant in a case examining the lawfulness and reasonableness of the Council’s decision to impose a calendar meter condition and a condition requiring all private hire vehicles licensed by the authority to be white. Both conditions were successfully defeated.

Fets v Durham City Council [2005]

Karamjit appeared on behalf of Mr. Fets in a case of hackney carriage drivers in Durham challenging the decision of the Council to impose a colour condition upon all such vehicles. The condition was successfully defeated in a 5 day hearing in the Crown Court.
